Video is a GREAT medium.
If done correctly, it brings together two beautiful things, words and pictures, to form a phenomenal experience.
But raw footage means nothing without your editing prowess.
In fact, the best video footage in the world amounts to an Ed Wood style cacophony if not put together expertly.
But sadly, not many plebs know that.
Like photography, with the advent of tools that make creating pictures and moving pictures easier, videography has seen the introduction of the overnight “video guru” or “video ninja”.
That being the case, how will you distinguish yourself from lower level videographers?
Are you missing out on clients?
So you’re posting some of your work to YouTube or Vimeo.
Perhaps you’re uploading the odd vid to Facebook too.
And the likes and shares pile in.
You love the attention. It really seems as though people grok that you’re not an amateur videographer poser.
But what if you’re missing out on more clients?
Don’t get me wrong, we all like a like and share.
But there are more channels to reach.
And one of the ways you can draw more attention to your video work is by getting a website set up for marketing.
Before you think, “what, how ancient and impractical is THAT,” read on to see how you can tie in a website with your video work.
What can you do with your videography website?
Apart from the obvious, which is post your contact details and area of service, a website is a great place to share your new vids.
I don’t mean you should store your videos on my server. That would be silly.
But what you can do is create blog posts and embed your videos from YouTube or Vimeo.
A blog post is a great place to share some background info about your masterpieces.
Sometimes people want to know the backstory to your stories.
To make yourself look even more like the expert videographer you are, you can create a section called “videography tips”.
And if you target more than one niche you could set up different categories. That makes you look even better to humans and search engines.
For instance, if you video weddings but you also happen to be one of your region’s best online video ad creators, you could create a category for each of those and so refine your targeting.
The message you send to brides is vastly different to the message you send to someone selling leather goods, for instance.
Email marketing is still one of the best ways to reach lovers of your video work.
Think about it, when you share your vids to Facebook you’ll get your likes and shares.
But what point is there to tannie Gertruida from Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein liking and sharing your videos?
She’s never going to order a video from you. She’s been married four times before and any wedding she walks into now will be sans pictures of any kind.
Her friends are also not interested in getting videos shot, so the “brand building” excuse won’t fly.
But if someone gives you their email address they agree to be bothered by you whenever you post a new video blog.
And when a subscriber clicks through to your website from one of your automatic emails they’re faced with your content only. There are no distractions like you’ll get with Facebook.
And if you have their attention you can get them to take an action of your choosing.
Search engine marketing
When last did you pay attention to search engines as a viable source of traffic for your videos?
I’m sure your YouTube videos are doing great on Google when you search for something in your niche.
But why not get text results cornered too?
That way you’re saturating all channels with you.
These are some of the search terms people use to find videographers in their area:
- videographer near me
- event videographer near me
- freelance videographer near me
- music videographer near me
- business videographer near me
- videographer port elizabeth
- affordable wedding videographer near me
- commercial videographer near me
- cheap wedding videographer near me
Are you featuring for those terms?
You could be.
And even if you don’t offer all of those services, that doesn’t mean you can’t use those terms on your website to try and get more people seeing your work.
It’s probably not that unprofessional for a videographer to use a Yahoo or Gmail account for email.
But with my package you can set up as many email addresses as you desire, your hosting package size being the only limit.
And if you use POP to set up your email accounts you won’t have to worry about wasting hosting space.
Your videography website comes with Google Analytics. It’s a great way for you to see metrics related to your site and to check if you’re growing as you should.
But you also receive a free analytics email report that goes out once a week (Fridays are good for this sort of thing) and shares info like which keywords brought visitors from where, and which pages they used.
You’ll also see some elementary social media metrics.
Your website also has a search function that records what people search for.
This is great for seeing what the market wants.
For instance, if you start seeing more website searches for “skateboard video creation” quickly create a few skate vids and start marketing yourself as a pro skateboard video creator.
Your videography website will look great on any size screen.
And since you’ll be embedding your videos, they’ll probably open in the YouTube or Vimeo app if a visitor clicks on it from a cell phone.
You don’t want people to squint and pinch to try and make out what you’re trying to say with your work.
How much do you think a videography website with all of the above functionality will set you back?
The price of this steeply priced watch which no one can afford?
I’m not cheap and you don’t get a cheap package, so there’s no reason to believe you’ll be paying peanuts.
